Legendary meteorite hunter, Jim Kreigh, discovered this strewn field while
hunting for gold nuggets. For two years, Kreigh hunted and mapped the
strewnfield in secrecy with trusted confidants Twink Monrad and John
Blennert, generating what is perhaps the best strewnfield map in American
history. Even though the fall has been dated from 15,000 - 20,000 years ago
-- the oldest non-Antarctic distribution ellipse on our planet -- the
material is in a wonderful state of preservation due to Arizona's arid
climate in this elevated plateau region. All meteorites found in this
location are known as Gold Basin specimens, even though recovered meteorites
obviously originated in multiple fall events. That said, I'm rather certain
these specimens come from the larger L4 classification. |
